Begin with a visit to the Mutter Museum at the College of Physicians
of Philadelphia. The Mutter Museum, the legacy of Thomas Dent Mutter, a
retired professor of surgery, is an awe-inspiring place. The Museum's collections
include over 20,000 objects, including fluid-preserved anatomical and pathological
specimens, medical instruments, anatomical and pathological models, items
of memorabilia of famous scientists and physicians, and medical illustrations.
Noteworthy displays include instruments carried in the 1853 Artic Expedition
of Dr. Elisha Kent Kane, a 1949 Emerson iron lung, the medicine chest of
Benjamin Rush, a jaw tumor removed from President Grover Cleveland in 1893,
a collection of 139 skulls, and a plaster cast of the bodies of Chang and
Eng, the original Siamese twins. For those faint of heart, the Museum also
features a medicinal plant garden which Dr. Benjamin Rush (in 1787) urged
the College members to maintain as a natural way to replenish supplies
for their medicine chests. Today, you are welcome to stroll through and
admire four formal beds consisting of herbs used in Rush’s time.
